So You Want to Support Survivors of Intimate Partner/Sexual Violence?
Step One: Educate Yourself
Step Two: Here Are Some of the Organizations You Can Support Which Do This Work
State Coalitions Against Domestic Violence (and, their websites should have information about local programs!)
Break the Cycle (based in LA and DC)
In DC? Look for the DC Coalition Against Domestic Violence, the DC Rape Crisis Center (which offers counseling and operates the DC rape crisis hotline–you can also volunteer!), DC SAFE (which is the only 24-hour service provider for domestic violence survivors in DC–you can also volunteer!), Ramona’s Way, House of Ruth, My Sister’s Place, the DC Forensic Nurse Examiners, Ayuda, the Jewish Coalition Against Domestic Violence (JCADA), the Wendt Center for Loss and Healing, and the DC Women’s Center.
In NYC? Look for the New York State Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Safe Horizon, Sanctuary for Families, the Center Against Domestic Violence, The Safe Center LI, the NYC Anti-Violence Project, the Violence Intervention Program, the New York Asian Women’s Center, Turning Point, the Violence Intervention and Treatment Program at Wyckoff Medical Center (and several other medical centers), the New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault, and CAMBA.
Again, you can find your local domestic violence organization’s on your state coalition’s website, and find your local rape crisis organizations on RAINN’s website!
Get out there and help put an end to sexual and intimate partner violence!
