In Which I Actually Flip Out About The GOP And Women

This post may come across as a bit of a rant, and I’m sorry for that, but I need everyone to understand something:

WE HAVE A POLITICAL PARTY IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA THAT PRIORITIZES RAPISTS OVER WOMEN AND PUBLICLY DEFENDS THIS STANCE.

Let’s begin with a little tiny bit of political theory, just so we’re all on the same page.  A couple hundred years ago, philosophers like Locke and Rousseau came up with theories regarding what we now call the Social Contract, wherein people cede some of their rights in exchange for protection and access to other, more important rights.  So, for example, we pay taxes because this is how the government upholds access to things like the right to education, and we give up our ability to run around doing whatever the f**k we want in exchange for a justice system.  The theory follows that when individuals violate this contract, they cede their rights-~-we fine them (right to property) or jail them (right to liberty).  Everyone following so far?

RAPE IS A FELONY.  I’m still not sure why we are not all on the same page here but this is just a fact, rape is a felony in the United States.  It is a felony in EVERY STATE.  It’s such a crazy offense that we have sex offender registries in the U.S. (in which we diminish the right to privacy BECAUSE THESE PEOPLE COMMITTED A CRIME).

What I am saying to you is this: rapists, as felons, have violated the social contract and as such cede their civil liberties.

So this is the part where I get really, really angry: Paul Ryan, former VP candidate, continually sponsors bills promoting rapists’ rights, often at the expense of victims’ rights.

It’s not even like he’s only done this once: Paul Ryan had previously sponsored a bill saying that rapists’ deserve fathers’ rights.  Among the many problems with this is the fact that when you go to jail, you LOSE a lot of parental rights (for example, custody, which is pretty much the basis of all the other rights).  Why?  BECAUSE YOU’RE A FELON.

But let’s back the crazy train up for a second, shall we?  Back in 2011, Paul Ryan co-sponsored the Sanctity of Life Bill, a possibly unconstitutional law that stated that life begins at fertilization (this is the same probably incorrect theory that led to Tennessee trying to criminalize miscarriages) and would have made it legal for all states to ban abortion, even in cases of rape, incest and the life of the mother (which, by the way, is considered a human right and is definitely unconstitutional, I really don’t understand).  And this is the new and EVEN SCARIER version of that law, because THIS shining example of why we still need feminism in the United States includes a provision that says if a woman is raped and goes to a state that allows abortion because the state in which she was raped doesn’t her rapist could sue her to stop the abortion and win.

CONGRESS, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!  The original law was voted down in 2011, and I can only hope, pray, and potentially plan hunger strikes until the same occurs with this law, but here’s the fact of the matter: the GOP wants Paul Ryan to be the face of modern day Republican politics.

And Paul Ryan, in addition to thinking that blobs of cells deserve more rights than the actual mature sentient human beings carrying them, thinks that rapists deserve more rights than rape victims.

TELL ME AGAIN HOW THERE’S NO WAR ON WOMEN.  SERIOUSLY, TELL ME THAT WOMEN ARE TREATED COMPLETELY FAIRLY IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND THERE IS NO FIGHT LEFT TO FIGHT.

Worse, I’m not even that surprised.  I mean, come on, this is Paul “Rape Is Just Another Method of Conception” Ryan we’re talking about.  His party has repeatedly diminished the experience of survivors of sexual assault.  Someone ACTUALLY TRIED TO DEFEND TODD AKIN’S COMMENT THIS WEEK, by saying that the stress of being raped would cause a woman not to ovulate.  I’m seriously concerned about the Republican Party’s a) apparent lack of any sort of background in biology, which I’m pretty sure all of us had to take to get out of high school, and b) ABSURD disregard for both the civil and human rights that ought be accorded women in the United States of America.

So let me just summarize the current State of the Union for you all: your politicians, the people supposed to uphold the interests of this country, think that women should not be able to make decisions about their bodies; that rapists’ behavior can be excused on the basis of the victim’s appearance; that rapists deserve more rights than their victims; and that women ought be treated as second-class citizens of the United States.

Oh, and I sick to death of this misogynist bulls**t.
