Virginia Loves the Fetus, Does Not Give a Fuck About the Child

Virginia’s Attorney General blocked gay couples from adopting in a vote on Wednesday. Agencies will now effectively be permitted to discriminate against prospective foster or adoptive parents based on sexual orientation, age, gender, disability, religion, political belief, and family status, according to the Times-Dispatch.

So you voted for John Kerry. Would that make you an “unfit parent” in the eyes of Virginia? Probably as much as being Jewish or Muslim. And heaven forbid a stable, loving gay couple wants to become parents?

Meanwhile, this is the same state that’s overruled a panel of state health experts and mandated abortion clinics to have similar regulations as hospitals. This drastically reduces the number of abortion clinics in this state – women’s clinics that perform abortions do not need hospital regulations for an in-clinic, basic procedure and cannot afford to build new premises that fit within hospital standards. These limits also do not differentiate between surgical procedures and oral medication, such as RU486 that is in some states often taken at home and without direct doctor supervision. These regulations are medically irrelevant and purposefully burdensome. They obviously only exist to push anti-choice legislations without violating the legal rights granted after Roe v. Wade.

Meanwhile, this is the same state in which a house member just filed yet another Personhood bill. You can read about that (failed) attempt in Mississippi about a month ago HERE. This bill provides that “unborn children at every stage of development enjoy all the rights, privileges, and immunities available to other persons, citizens, and residents of the commonwealth.” I guess the fetus will be given the same right to biases against adoption as the other citizens – it might be a male!

Funny, it seems, that the state is up in arms about the unwanted sacks of potential incubating in its female voters, but doesn’t seem to mind the 1,317 children in the state’s foster care waiting to be adopted. The lawmakers in Virginia don’t seem to care that more than 5,700 children are in the system, on average. The state wants to force women to carry unwanted children to term, but will put up all sorts of restricts for families that WANT to parent.

It is outdated ideology that is blindly anti-choice that guides Virginia, not a view that respects human rights and aims to give all children an ideal, loving home.
