Happy October!

Hi there, Radical Idealists! It’s October, and for those of you who don’t already know, it’s LGBT History Month! No, that does not mean that I’ll be focusing exclusively on LGBT issues in October, but it DOES mean that I will be talking about them more, and hopefully hosting some guest bloggers on LBGT topics, in honor of LGBT history month.

http://lgbthistorymonth.com/ is the official website for LGBT history month. They honor a different LGBT icon each day for the month of October, and today’s icon is Alison Bechdel. She is a famous LGBT cartoonist who created the comic strip “Dykes to Watch Out For”, which explored the stereotyped world of lesbian relationships in a way that appealed to the general public. The comic strip also popularized the Bechdel Test, a litmus test for sexism in cinema that asks the following questions: 1) Does the movie contain at least 2 named female characters? 2) Do they talk to each other? and 3) Do they talk to each other about something other than a man?
An alarming number of movies, even movies with strong female characters, do not pass this test. Try asking those questions when watching movies for a while…you’ll start to see the absence of female dialogue.

Want to write about LGBT issues for The Radical Idea in honor of LGBT history month? Send me an email at RadicalButLogical@gmail.com with your name and intended topic at any time during the month of October.
